Shanghai GM Headquarters, Shanghai, China

In addition to office space the new Shanghai GM headquarters incorporates extensive exhibition and meeting facilities within an environmentally conscious building. Located within the Shanghai GM manufacturing complex in Pudong, the new facility is situated adjacent to the existing administrative building.

Conceptually, the building’s massing is derived from the idea of two interlocking volumes—representing two seemingly opposing forces that must be reconciled in the design of many everyday objects, from automobiles to buildings.

Function and form; practical and esoteric; rational and irrational. The productive tension between contrasting elements becomes a powerful conceptual framework for the design process, creating opportunities for unexpected relationships and unanticipated solutions.
